Creating 3D cell shaded cartoon or illustration in Photoshop CS4

To create cell shaded cartoon or illustration with 3D objects inside Photoshop CS4 is pretty easy.

You will need to use the Render Settings… in the 3D panel to render out the cell shaded cartoon appearance.

Basically what you are doing is rendering out the edges of the 3D object and fills the inside with solid colors.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. First, import a 3D object or create one inside Photoshop.

2. Select the 3D layer and click 3D / Render Settings…

Render Settings…

3. In the 3D Render Settings window, checkmark Edge Style and set the Crease Threshold to 80 with Line Width at 1. The Edge Style allows you to control and adjust the edge settings of the 3D object. You can change the edge color, the thickness, the style, the Crease Threshold and the line width. The Crease Threshold of 1 will create the wire frame.

5. With the Solid Rendering enable, change the Face Style to Unit Texture. Now you have something that look like a cartoon drawn by hand, but it is still a 3D object.

5. Click OK on the 3D Render Settings and put the Anti-Alias to Best.
