How to use the Clone Tool on a 3D object in Photoshop CS4

This is a great option if you are using references from different documents and want to clone them into a texture map. Now you can clone from multiple images on multiple documents directly into your 3D object with the clone tool.

Keep in mind when doing any type of texture map painting. Your UV map need to be set up correctly, we will not talk about UV mapping on this post.

Here’s how to use the clone from different documents onto a 3D object:

1. First, import in your 3D object.

2. Open an image you like to clone from.

3. Now you have two different documents, your 3D object in one document and the second is the image document you want to clone from.

4. Select the image document, click on the Clone Tool and make sure you click on “Current Layer” from the Sample drop down. This will allow you to clone from the current layer and not from all the layers.

Using the Clone Tool

5. Go to your 3D object and click where you want to clone.

6. If your clone brush is too big, open up the Clone Source panel and resize the clone brush.

Toggle the Clone Source panel

7. Now paint it on your 3D object. Done!
